FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions.

What is the Difference Between Granite and Marble?

Both granite and marble are natural stones with remarkable beauty. Both have a certain lack of predictability that designers and artisans celebrate. Sample stones are representative of a quarry’s product, the material quarried will differ slightly in color and veining from the sample. Even individual marble or granite slabs will possess a certain amount of color variation from one end to the other. Embrace this one of a kind concept and enjoy the long-lasting durable beauty of marble and granite.

Granite and marble are two of the most sought after materials for the following reasons:

Granite

  • Is a great option for kitchen use, outdoor applications, fireplaces and countertops.
  • An igneous rock formed from magma, it is tough, low maintenance and one of the hardest minerals in the world.
  • Can withstand abuse of nature and ravages of time.
  • Has strong heat resistance.
  • Resists chipping and scratching.
  • Is available in a large variety of colors finishes and edge profiles.

Marble

  • Known for its elegance and beauty.
  • Most often chosen for bathroom vanities and other areas where it will not be exposed to citrus liquids.
  • Preferred material for sculptors.
  • Metamorphic rock that starts out as sediment. Marble is not as hard as granite.
  • Requires more tending than granite and scratches more easily than granite.
  • Is available in a large variety of colors finishes and edge profiles.

Can granite chip or crack?

With normal use, no. Intentional use of a hammer or other tool to inflict abuse could chip granite. Chips can be filled with a granite dust and epoxy mixture. Normal use will not crack granite.

Will my countertop have seams?

Granite comes in blocks usually no more than 10’ long. Depending on the size of the job there will most likely be seams. The visibility of seams will depend on the granularity, color and pattern. For most people, the beauty of natural granite outweighs the concern of seams.

Can I cut on granite?

Always cut and chop on a wooden or plastic cutting board (this is to protect your knives not the granite!)

How does one clean granite?

Polished granite is a durable stone. Granite is approximately 95-98% stain resistant. We recommend and use a silicone impregnator on all our natural stone products. This ensures lasting life and beauty. Use mild phosphate-free, biodegradable cleaners which contain no aromatics to clean granite. Granite Quartz Depot offers recommend care products for your use.

Can a granite countertop stain or burn?

While all stones are porous to some extent, granite has very little porosity. Most colors will never show any moisture stain. Further, granite will not be affected by kitchen heat.
